Buy our cookie, help change a mother's destiny
Despite the rapid economic development in major Chinese cities, there are still 68
million illiterate women in rural areas (based on official statistics). These women do
not even know how to read or write their names, let alone climbing out of abject poverty. Since 2006 Aide et Action
has begun practical literacy classes in Gansu, Ningxia and Guizhou through the
cooperation with NGOs in China, teaching women in rural villages to learn Chinese
characters, simple mathematics, knowledge about hygiene and farming skills.
Literacy classes have allowed women to take charge of their destiny and created
indirect positive impact on the women and their children.

Aide et Action hosted a kick-off ceremony for the Mothers' Day cookie charity sale event at The Institute of Culinary Arts, Cheung Sha Wan on 31st April 2011, to raise public awareness on women illiteracy issues in Mainland China, as well as to promote the coming cookie charity sale event in May.
Artiste Tse Suet-sum, her daughter Ka-wing and Ngo Ka Nin made an appearance as ambassadors. This meaningful event was made possible by the generous support of Hang Seng Bank and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, and AEA would like to express its warmest gratitude to them for providing sponsorship and volunteer team to help with the cookies baking and charity sale.

Fight against women illiteracy, arduous and a long way to go
Knowledge, the key to change one's destiny and redeem self-esteem, self-confidence
'I am capable to be a Mother
A simple mathematics of addition has made me a competent mother in
my child's heart, "Mom, you are great!" This is because of Aide et Action,
CDCFR and Ms. Ma my teacher. Half a year ago, I was still an illiterate, able
to do nothing for my child's learning. I remember once my child ran to me
excitedly and asked, "Mom, what's the solution for 18+38?" I was shocked
and didn't know how to respond. "Go away, I am busy." But inside my heart I
whispered, "Sorry son, I do not know." Through the literacy classes, I learned a
lot of knowledge, now I am able to teach my child and I am so satisfied.

'My discovery after learning
Looking back at the 6 month's learning, I felt excited from the bottom of my heart
that I can now go out freely and work with other women. I am not afraid of being
cheated, and go to the wrong washroom. In the autumn of 1998, I went to pick cotton
from the fields with other women in Xinjiang. In the Lanzhou Train station, I felt so
embarrassed and burst into tears because I was scolded by a policeman for going
into a wrong washroom. This was a lesson learned and totally changed my attitude
towards learning. I cherish opportunities that allow my children to learn after that
lesson.'
