Haiti: Aide et Action appeals for donations to help rebuild the country
(14 January 2010)

Social instability has always been Haiti’s main problem and this natural catastrophe is likely to turn into a real social crisis: strong insecurity, violences and plundering are already on the rise. The lack of water and infrastructures has made the population’s living conditions more precarious. In the coming weeks, Aide et Action will need to concentrate its efforts on the protection of the population, children and parents.

In normal times, in Haiti, only one school-age child out of four receives an education. For the most destitute households, sending children to school represents a major effort. In case of emergency, this investment is unlikely to be sustained. Such a catastrophe is not only likely to worsen the population’s living conditions, but it will also tighten their chances of building their future. Nesmy Manigat, Head of Caribbean and the whole Dominican Republic team are mobilized to support the Aide et Action desk in Port-au-Prince. The Aide et Action local teams will soon start preparing a rebuild project.

Aide et Action launches a call for donations to start rebuilding the infrastructures and bring support to the traumatized populations. The collected funds will provide the Aide et Actions local teams with the information they need to establish a precise diagnostic of the needs ( in terms of infrastructures, in the education field as well as support to the relocated populations). Post-emergency actions will be implemented as soon as possible with the concerned population as well as Haitian and international partners to ease the reintegration of young people into school.

With you, with the Haitian population, let’s act so that the catastrophe does not further widen the already crying inequalities!
